ms word - zip code + 4 mail merge treated like an arithmetic expression -

i'm trying simple mail merge in word 2010 when insert excel field that's supposed represent zip code connecticut (ie. 06880) having 2 problems:

  1. the leading 0 gets suppressed such 06880 becoming 6880 instead. know can @ least toggle field code make works {mergefield zipcode # 00000} , @ least works.

but here's real problem can't seem figure out:

  1. a zip+4 field such 06470-5530 gets treated arithmetic expression. 6470 - 5530 = 940 using above formula instead becomes 00940 wrong.

perhaps there in excel spreadsheet or option in word need set make work? please advise, thanks.

as long zip codes reaching word (with or without "-" signs in 5+4 format zips, field code should sort things out. however, if mixing text , numeric formats in excel column, there danger ole db provider or odbc driver - if using data - treat column numeric , return text values 0.

yes, word treats text strings numeric expressions have noticed. when try apply numeric format, or when try calculation in { = } field, when sum table cell contents in { = } field, or when word decides numeric comparison in (say) { if } field - in latter case can word treat expression string surrounding comparands double-quotes.
